RKLB Stock Jumps as Rocket Lab Debuts New Solar Cell for Space

Rocket Lab (RKLB) shares are in the spotlight on Wednesday after the space company unveiled a new high-efficiency solar cell designed specifically for spacecraft. In its press release, RKLB said its new Inverted Metamorphic (IMM) Apex cell delivers 31.5% beginning-of-life efficiency while weighing about 40% less than conventional alternatives.

The announcement comes as Rocket Lab stock has fallen out of favor with investors, currently down about 55% versus its year-to-date high.

Significance of IMM Apex for Rocket Lab Stock

IMM Apex eliminates the need for germanium — a critical mineral facing supply and cost pressures. This would enable customers to integrate it without major redesigns or retooling, making adoption easier across commercial, government, and national-security satellite programs.

Rocket Lab also said its IMM tech has more than a decade of testing behind it and already powers spacecraft including NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter.

This product launch is bullish for RKLB shares as it reinforces the company’s strategy of building a diversified space-infrastructure business rather than relying entirely on Electron and the yet-to-launch Neutron rocket.

Should You Load Up on RKLB Shares Today?

IMM Apex strengthens Rocket Lab’s bull thesis as it expands the addressable market and reduces exposure to germanium supply constraints, but the current valuation already reflects substantial expectations for future growth.

At a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of about 64x as of this writing, the launch service provider is expensive to own by any stretch of the imagination.

RKLB’s revenue hit a record $234.1 million in Q2, while backlog reached $2.36 billion. However, it remains unprofitable and expects Neutron’s first launch to slip beyond the original 2026 target.

Note that insiders have predominantly unloaded Rocket Lab shares in the trailing 12 months. This is another reason to exercise caution in playing them at current levels.

How Wall Street Recommends Playing Rocket Lab

Despite concerns, Wall Street analysts remain bullish as ever on Rocket Lab for the next 12 months.

According to Barchart, the consensus rating on RKLB stock sits at “Strong Buy,” with the mean price target of about $111 indicating potential for an 80% rally from current levels.
