BHP Group Outlines BRL1.2 Billion Allocation Under New Rio Doce Agreement in Brazil

04:48 AM EDT, 09/09/2026 (MT Newswires) -- BHP Group (BHP.L, BHG.JO) detailed a new allocation of over 1.2 billion Brazilian reais under the new Rio Doce Agreement, which covers direct reparation obligations for the 2015 collapse of Samarco's Fundão dam in Mariana, Brazil. Since June, new funds released included 243 million reais for public health initiatives, 850 million reais for environmental conservation and 87.6 million reais for economic development in the Mariana municipality, according to a Wednesday release. The mining giant added that as of April, a total of 42.11 billion reais in government payments, financial aid and compensation were issued under the new deal. The initial Rio Doce Agreement was signed in 2024 by Brazilian public authorities, the Samarco joint venture and the latter's owners, BHP unit BHP Brazil and Vale (XVALO.MC, CVLC.F).
