Quarterly report on steel production of key enterprises in late August 2026
I. GENERAL SITUATION
In late August 2026, according to key statistics, steel companies produced a total of 20.74 million tons of crude steel, with an average daily output of 1.885,000 tons, a decrease of 4.0% month-on-month; 19.41 million tons of pig iron, with an average daily output of 1.765,000 tons, a decrease of 3.0% month-on-month; 2.09 million tons of steel, with an average daily output of 2.08 million tons, an increase of 4.8% month-on-month.

According to this estimate, the country produced 2.39 million tons of crude steel per day, down 4.0% from month to month (see Figure 1), 2.14 million tons of iron per day, down 3.0% from month to month, and 3.83 million tons of steel per day, up 2.0% month on month.

II. Situation by region
(1) Crude steel production
Among the six major regions in late August, with the exception of the daily crude steel production of key statistical enterprises in the Northeast and Northwest regions, which increased compared to the previous quarter, all other regions declined to varying degrees (see Table 2 for details). Details are as follows:
Crude steel production in North China decreased by 30,000 tons (-4.7%) per day, or less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Hebei Province decreased by 31,000 tons (-7.2%), while daily production in Tianjin decreased by 90,000 tons (-17.7%); in addition, daily production in Shanxi Province increased by 10,000 tons (+9.1%).
Crude steel production in East China decreased by 31,000 tons (-5.4%), mainly related to a decrease of 22,000 tons (-10.0%) in Jiangsu Province, a decrease of 80,000 tons (-17.5%), and a decrease of 40,000 tons (-3.9%) in Shandong Province; in addition, daily production in Fujian Province increased by 60,000 tons (+11.5%).
Crude steel production in the southwest region decreased by 70,000 tons (-6.1%), mainly related to a decrease of 40,000 tons (-10.2%) in Yunnan Province and a decrease of 20,000 tons (-10.4%) in Chongqing.
Crude steel production in the central and southern regions decreased by 19,000 tons (-5.5%), with daily production in Guangdong Province falling by 60,000 tons (-7.9%), Hubei by 50,000 tons (-7.7%), Henan by 40,000 tons (-5.7%), Hunan by 20,000 tons (-3.0%), and Guangxi Autonomous Region by 20,000 tons (-2.9%) per day.
The daily crude steel production in Northeast China increased by 50,000 tons (+2.4%), an increase of less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Liaoning Province increased by 30,000 tons (+2.1%), and daily production in Jilin Province increased by 20,000 tons (+5.4%).
The daily crude steel production in northwest China increased by 20,000 tons (+2.2%), an increase of less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Gansu Province increased by 20,000 tons (+6.0%).

(ii) Pig iron production
Among the six major regions in late August, with the exception of key statistical enterprises in Northeast China, where the daily production of pig iron increased compared to the previous quarter and remained basically the same in the northwest region compared to the previous quarter, all other regions declined to varying degrees (see Table 3 for details), as follows:
The daily production of pig iron in North China decreased by 23,000 tons (-3.7%), or less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Hebei Province decreased by 30,000 tons (-7.4%), while daily production in Tianjin decreased by 80,000 tons (-12.5%); in addition, daily production in Shanxi Province increased by 15,000 tons (+15.5%).
The daily decline in pig iron production in East China is 26,000 tons (-5.0%), mainly related to the decrease of 16,000 tons (-8.1%) in Jiangsu Province, 50,000 tons (-5.6%) in Shandong Province, and 40,000 tons (-7.1%) in Anhui Province.
The daily production of pig iron in the southwest region decreased by 40,000 tons (-4.1%), or less than 5%. Among them, the daily production in Yunnan Province decreased by 30,000 tons (-9.3%), while the daily production in Chongqing decreased by 10,000 tons (-7.5%).
The daily production of pig iron in the central and southern regions decreased by 50,000 tons (-1.6%), or less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Henan Province decreased by 40,000 tons (-6.3%), while daily production in Hubei Province decreased by 10,000 tons (-2.1%).
The daily production of pig iron in the Tohoku region increased by 30,000 tons (+1.6%), an increase of less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Liaoning Province increased by 20,000 tons (+1.1%), and daily production in Jilin Province increased by 10,000 tons (+5.0%).
The daily production of pig iron in the northwest region was basically the same as in the previous quarter.

(3) Steel production
Among the six major regions in late August, with the exception of the daily steel production of key statistical enterprises in the southwest region, which declined compared to the previous quarter, all other regions all showed varying degrees of increase (see Table 4 for details). Details are as follows:
The daily increase in steel production in Northeast China was 29,000 tons (+16.8%), mainly related to an increase of 26,000 tons (+19.0%) in daily production in Liaoning Province.
The daily production of steel in North China increased by 16,000 tons (+2.3%), an increase of less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Shanxi Province increased by 14,000 tons (+12.3%).
The daily production of steel in East China increased by 21,000 tons (+3.9%), an increase of less than 5%. Among them, daily production in Anhui Province increased by 60,000 tons (+10.1%), Shanghai increased by 40,000 tons (+8.2%), Zhejiang increased by 40,000 tons (+16.7%), Jiangxi Province increased by 30,000 tons (+3.7%), and daily production in Shandong Province increased by 30,000 tons (+3.4%).
The daily increase in steel production in the northwest region was 60,000 tons (+7.7%), mainly related to an increase of 40,000 tons (+20.9%) in Shaanxi Province and an increase of 10,000 tons (+6.2%) in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
Daily steel production in the central and southern regions increased by 21,000 tons (+6.5%), mainly related to an increase of 11,000 tons (+14.4%) in Guangdong Province, an increase of 50,000 tons (+8.5%) in Hunan Province, an increase of 30,000 tons (+4.8%) in Hubei Province, and an increase of 20,000 tons (+3.7%) in Guangxi Autonomous Region.
The daily production of steel in the southwest region decreased by 10,000 tons (-0.6%), or less than 5%. Among them, the daily production in Yunnan Province decreased by 10,000 tons (-1.6%).
