Iron ore rose above $100 per ton for the first time in seven weeks. Apart from expectations for pre-holiday replenishment in China and high shipping rates, traders also supported the price by removing their previous bullish positions on coking coal. Iron ore futures in the Singapore market once rose 1.6% to US$101.10 per tonne, a record high since July 2. As demand for steel is generally weak in summer, iron ore prices have remained below the psychologically significant $100 per ton mark for most of this summer. At one point, renminbi-denominated iron ore futures rose 1.8% intraday.
