Apple (AAPL.US) MacBook roadmap adjustments: cut out foldable and mid-size OLED models and add 13.8-inch models

The Zhitong Finance App learned that according to the latest report from the research institute Omdia, Apple (AAPL.US) has cancelled the R&D plans for two MacBook products, one large foldable MacBook and one medium OLED MacBook. At the same time, Apple is still advancing the overall strategy of introducing OLED display technology into all MacBook and iPad products, but has re-planned the specific product portfolio.

According to Omdia, the screen size of the canceled foldable MacBook is expected to be between 16.1 inches and 18 inches when unfolded. The product had previously been delayed, and some reports at the time described it as a large-screen foldable iPad rather than a MacBook. Another cancelled OLED MacBook was originally planned to be equipped with a 14.4-inch to 16.1-inch screen, positioned between the standard MacBook Pro and the foldable model.

After the cancellation of the two products, the 14.3-inch to 16.3-inch size range will continue to be occupied by the MacBook Pro series. The general direction in which Apple introduced OLED display technology into the MacBook product line has not changed, but the specific pace of implementation and product definitions have been adjusted.

As part of the adjustments, Apple plans to add a 13.8-inch MacBook, positioned between the existing LCD MacBook Air and the OLED MacBook Pro, which is expected to be launched in 2029. The model will use a next-generation OLED display design, including LTPO+ backplane, under-screen camera, color filter packaging and other technologies, and is expected to support touch sensing.

In addition, the 14.3-inch and 16.3-inch OLED versions of the MacBook Pro are also called “MacBook Ultra” by some reports, and are expected to be released from the second half of 2026 to the beginning of 2027. Omdia pointed out that the existing mini-LED version of the MacBook Pro will not be immediately delisted, and it is expected that it will be sold in parallel with the OLED version until at least 2028.

Apple has yet to respond to requests for comment in response to the above news.
