ITT Inc. (NYSE:ITT) shareholders (or potential shareholders) will be happy to see that the CEO, President & Director, Luca Savi, recently bought a whopping US$1.0m worth of stock, at a price of US$200. While that only increased their holding size by 3.7%, it is still a big swing by our standards.
In fact, the recent purchase by CEO, President & Director Luca Savi was not their only trade of ITT shares this year. They previously made a sale of -US$12m worth of shares at a price of US$194 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of US$201, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 32% of Luca Savi's holding.

Insiders own 0.4% of ITT shares, worth about US$63m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
It is good to see the recent insider purchase. On the other hand the transaction history, over the last year, isn't so positive. While recent transactions indicate confidence in ITT, insiders don't own enough of the company to overcome our cautiousness about the longer term transactions. So they seem pretty well aligned, overall. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing ITT.
