European Commission President von der Leyen said prior to talks with NATO Secretary General Rutte that Ukraine requested the EU to allocate billions of euros to purchase anti-aircraft weapons, including missiles used by the US “Patriots” system. On September 1, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Callas said that EU member states have not made any decisions on the transfer or sale of “Patriot” missiles to Ukraine, including those that are about to expire. Von der Leyen also said that since June, the European Union has allocated about 8.5 billion euros out of a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine to purchase drones and missiles. The loan funds are also expected to be used to purchase European-made fighter jets. The European Commission said earlier that loans for defense purposes totaled 60 billion euros.
