Even if it's not a huge purchase, we think it was good to see that Amit Sheth, the Chairman & MD of Focus Lighting and Fixtures Limited (NSE:FOCUS) recently shelled out ₹5.3m to buy stock, at ₹66.51 per share. Although the purchase is not a big one, by either a percentage standpoint or absolute value, it can be seen as a good sign.
In fact, the recent purchase by Amit Sheth was the biggest purchase of Focus Lighting and Fixtures shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being ₹66.14). It's very possible they regret the purchase, but it's more likely they are bullish about the company. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when an insider has purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Amit Sheth.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Focus Lighting and Fixtures insiders own 51% of the company, currently worth about ₹2.3b based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
