Macau's e-payment transactions in July increased by 3.1% and 6.3%, respectively, in the restaurant industry and retail sector

The Zhitong Finance App learned that according to data from the Macau Statistics and Census Bureau, the amount of electronic payment transactions (hereinafter referred to as transaction volume) in the restaurant industry and retail industry increased by 3.1% and 6.3% respectively in July 2026. The transaction volume of the two industries increased by 1.9% and 14.3%, respectively, in the first seven months.

Catering industry

In July 2026, the transaction volume of the restaurant industry rose 3.1% year on year to 1.16 billion yuan (MOP, same below). While the transaction volume of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean restaurants, tea restaurants and congee noodle shops increased by 5.8% and 4.2%, respectively, the transaction volume of Chinese restaurants decreased by 3.1%. The transaction volume of the restaurant industry increased 1.9% year-on-year to 8.08 billion yuan in the first seven months.

In July 2026, retail sales increased 6.3% year-on-year to $4.26 billion. Among them, cosmetics and hygiene products (+33.8%) and watches and jewellery (+33.3%) saw significant increases, while department store transactions (-14.7%) declined. Retail trade volume increased 14.3% year-on-year to $33.71 billion in the first seven months.
