Hong Kong stock opening | Hang Seng Index opened 0.88% lower, Ali allotment dragged technology stocks and gold stocks higher against the market

The Zhitong Finance App learned that on August 24, the Hang Seng Index opened 0.88% lower to 25,780.12 points; the Hang Seng Technology Index fell 1.11% to 4,713.16 points; and the State-owned Enterprises Index fell 0.98% to 8,549.35 points. Pre-market transactions amounted to approximately HK$5,013 billion.

Most Technet stocks fell, with Alibaba-W (09988) falling more than 8% to HK$113.1; Meituan-W (03690) falling more than 2%, and Tencent Holdings (00700) and Xiaomi Group-W (01810) falling more than 1%. According to the news, Alibaba plans to place 710 million new shares at HK$112.70 per share, raising a total of about HK$80 billion. The net proceeds will be used for AI infrastructure construction. The placement price will be discounted by about 8.4% from last Friday's closing price, making it the first placement since the Hong Kong stock listing in 2019; in addition, well-known investor Michael Berry said it has cleared Alibaba's US stocks.

Gold stocks reversed the market. Zijin Mining (02899) rose more than 3%, Shandong Gold (01787) rose nearly 3%, Zhaojin Mining (01818) rose more than 2%, and Chifeng Gold (06693) and Laosou Gold (06181) rose about 2%. Overnight, spot gold reached a three-month high of 4,600 US dollars/ounce.

Semiconductor stocks diverged, with Huahong Semiconductor (01347) rising nearly 3% and SMIC (00981) falling slightly.

Hong Kong technology stocks opened lower today due to Alibaba's stock allotment news and famous investor Bury's clearance; continued rise in international gold prices supported gold stocks to strengthen against the market.
