Whilst it may not be a huge deal, we thought it was good to see that the Lotus Resources Limited (ASX:LOT) Non-Executive Chairman, Michael Bowen, recently bought AU$113k worth of stock, for AU$0.22 per share. Even though that isn't a massive buy, it did increase their holding by 100%, which is arguably a good sign.
In fact, the recent purchase by Michael Bowen was the biggest purchase of Lotus Resources shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, at around the current price, which is AU$0.24. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. While we always like to see insider buying, it's less meaningful if the purchases were made at much lower prices, as the opportunity they saw may have passed. In this case we're pleased to report that the insider purchases were made at close to current prices.
Lotus Resources insiders may have bought shares in the last year, but they didn't sell any. Their average price was about AU$0.48. This is nice to see since it implies that insiders might see value around current prices. Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Our data suggests Lotus Resources insiders own 2.0% of the company, worth about AU$1.3m. But they may have an indirect interest through a corporate structure that we haven't picked up on. We consider this fairly low insider ownership.
It is good to see recent purchasing. And the longer term insider transactions also give us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. On this analysis the only slight negative we see is the fairly low (overall) insider ownership; their transactions suggest that they are quite positive on Lotus Resources stock. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
