Aqualis (OB:AQUA) Profit Recovery Gains Traction As Cash Pressure Builds

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

Aqualis walked into this earnings day with a flat month and a weaker 90 day return, yet the Q2 numbers told a more resilient story. The stock closed at NOK8.8 on 21 August, barely moved in the short term, while the business quietly shifted up a gear on profitability.

Revenue reached US$90.8m in Q2 and group adjusted earnings before interest and tax touched US$5.3m with a 5.8% margin. For an oil and gas focused engineering and services company that only recently turned profitable, this quarter was about proving that margin progress is real and not just a one off.

Aqualis earnings support energy transition optimism

Aqualis is starting to put some weight behind the bullish energy transition story. Revenue of US$90.8m rose 10% compared with Q1 and adjusted EBIT reached US$5.3m, with margin at 5.8%. The group managed a swing to a US$1.1m profit and quarterly return on capital employed of 15.6% versus the FY2025 average of 10.2%. Operationally, the key brands ABL, AGR and Longitude all reported healthy margins near the high teens. That supports the idea of an asset light, consultancy and software model that can convert specialist expertise into improving profitability.

Short term risks keep the Aqualis bear case alive

The bear case for Aqualis has not disappeared. Group revenue is lower than Q2 2025 and H1 operating cash flow was negative after a build up in working capital. Net debt of US$20.4m and an increased revolving credit facility draw to US$29m show the company leaning on its balance sheet while waiting for collections. OWC remains the weakest business despite recent cost cuts. With oil and gas still about 75% of revenue and management flagging geopolitical and renewables project risk, earnings quality will need to be watched closely.

After a quarter where Aqualis leaned on its balance sheet and reported a dividend that is not well covered, it is worth asking if these are isolated pressures or hints of deeper fragility. Review the full risk analysis for Aqualis which shows 2 important warning signs
