Researcher Daria Schaller said that the current weak economic growth in Germany has curtailed companies' demand for technicians to a certain extent. “As the economy recovers further, the shortage of skilled workers may become prominent again.” From an industry perspective, there was a marked increase in the shortage of skilled workers in the telecommunications industry. The proportion of companies reporting this problem soared from 16.3% in April to 31.1% in July; in the consulting and audit industry, this proportion rose from 52.4% to 64.7%; the share of companies reporting a shortage of skilled workers in the manufacturing industry was 18.7%, up 4.5 percentage points from April. Schaller said that the increase in the number of unemployed does not mean that companies can recruit more technicians; the key is whether the qualifications of job seekers can match the job requirements.
