The Seoul Metropolitan Government of South Korea announced a large-scale urban construction plan on Wednesday to transform all of the city's sidewalks into continuous shaded trails by 2028 to cope with extreme heat. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon announced this policy at a press conference, guaranteeing citizens “the right to walk on sheyed streets,” and emphasized the urgency of the issue. “Heatwaves are no longer just a short period of discomfort that goes away after a few days,” Oh Se-hoon said. “As their intensity and duration increase, they have become everyday disasters threatening the lives and safety of citizens.” After completion of the project, the shaded walkway will connect residential areas, subway stations, schools, bazaars, hospitals and parks. After the effectiveness evaluation is completed, this shaded walking network will be rolled out across the city in 2028.
