Aurizon Holdings stock has been under quiet pressure, with the share price down about 14% over the past month and past quarter, yet today’s full year numbers tell a more confident story. Underlying net profit after tax rose to A$433 million and earnings per share climbed 29%, powered by a 9% lift in underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. Management backed that up with a sharply higher full year dividend and a completed A$250 million buyback. For a capital intensive rail operator, that earnings and cash profile is the real headline today.

The upbeat story on Aurizon Holdings focuses on dependable cash, a growing bulk franchise and a path to lower coal reliance while keeping dividends flowing. This result gives that view some solid markers. Underlying EBITDA rose 9% to about A$1.7b and underlying NPAT reached A$433 million. Free cash flow was up about 11%. Management lifted full year dividends roughly 50% to A$0.23 per share and still completed a A$250 million buyback, which points to confidence in balance sheet capacity.
Operationally, several milestones were hit. Network EBITDA was higher with regulatory settings trending supportive. Bulk EBITDA climbed 38% to around A$233 million on contract wins and better volumes. Containerised freight volumes rose 25% in TEUs with revenue up 32%. Management now targets EBITDA breakeven in FY27. Together, those markers show tangible progress against the diversification and margin improvement story.
The sceptical view is that heavy coal exposure, regulatory and carbon costs and capital intensity could grind down earnings quality and constrain dividends. Parts of this result line up with those worries. Coal EBITDA only grew 2% and management is already flagging lower coal earnings in FY27 as contracted capacity revenue steps down and some customers rightsize volumes. That validates the concern that coal is more a headwind to manage than a growth engine.
Regulation and capital demands also remain front and centre. Network booked a A$27 million revenue under recovery that only turns into cash in FY28. This underlines timing and rule risk even with a supportive draft UT5+ outcome. Sustaining and transformation capex of A$590 million to A$660 million for FY27 plus growth capex of up to A$120 million show how much cash the asset base absorbs before any new projects or higher payouts are considered.
After heavy capex and a high headline dividend yield, interest cover and payout risk can hide under the surface.
