Pason Systems (TSX:PSI) Stock Gains Backing From Stronger Margins

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

Pason Systems heads into this earnings reaction with the stock at CA$14.71 and a solid run over the past month and quarter already in the bag. Investors were clearly paying up for a growth story. The question today is whether the latest numbers justify that confidence or challenge it.

The headline is a margin story. Q2 revenue landed at CA$100.8m, but the spotlight is on adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, which reached CA$35.7m on a 35.4% margin. That kind of operating leverage in drilling services is what is really driving the sentiment swing around the stock.

Pason Systems bulls focus on margin mix shift

Bulls argue Pason Systems is turning drilling data and automation into a higher margin mix that can compound earnings quality. Q2 gives that claim some support. Revenue grew modestly but adjusted EBITDA reached CA$35.7m with a 35.4% margin compared with 32.7% a year ago. That points to the operating leverage investors were hoping to see. North American Drilling set a new record for revenue per industry day at CA$1,078 and gross profit in that segment rose faster than revenue as operating expenses edged lower. Completions is doing what the narrative calls for. Job counts were slightly lower yet revenue per IWS job rose 11% as Pason moved away from low value work. Funds from operations grew faster than earnings and the balance sheet remains clean with cash, working capital and no debt.

Bear case tests on cyclic risk and new segments

The bear view is that heavy exposure to drilling cycles and unproven growth segments could cap progress and squeeze margins when activity softens. Q2 does not remove that risk. International Drilling revenue slipped to CA$13.1m as Argentina activity reset lower with the shift to unconventional work. Gross profit in that segment also eased even after cost cuts. Newer areas still look early. Solar & Energy Storage revenue was about CA$4.8m and essentially flat, with timing of control system deliveries creating lumpiness rather than clear scale. Completions is growing revenue per job but required higher operating spend and materially higher depreciation and amortization tied to acquisitions, which pressures reported earnings. The cost base in drilling remains largely fixed. That helped margins this quarter but would work in reverse if rig counts or frac activity weaken from here.
