More Highs for TSX

Stocks in Toronto continued to find new highs Thursday, as telecoms and techs led the way.

The TSX gained 97.15 points to finish Thursday at 36,759.29, still another all-time peak.

The Canadian dollar sank 0.005 cents at 71.78 cents U.S.

Stantec late on Wednesday beat second-quarter adjusted profit estimates driven by acquisition growth, while CCL Industries topped second-quarter sales estimates.

Stantec shares shed 83 cents to $102.82, while CCL shares grabbed $4.40, or 4.8%, to $95.98.

Pan American Silver missed quarterly adjusted profit estimates on lower gold output. PanAm dumped $7.15, or 9.8%, to $65.95.

In gold issues, I-80 Gold sank 11 cents, or 4.6%, to $2.31, while Aya Gold & Silver let go of $1.65, or 4.2%, to $37.44.

Extendicare gained 19 cents to $32.27, Bausch Health picked up 21 cents, or 2.4%, to $8.83, and Sienna Senior Living pointed downward four cents to $21.94.

On the earnings front, investment firm Brookfield posted a rise in second-quarter distributable earnings per share, though its shares were little changed. Brookfield regained 44 cents, to $62.82.

TELUS Corp. tallied 21 cents, or 1.6%, to $13.46, while Rogers was in the green 79 cents, or 1.6%, to $50.67.
Iran and the United States reportedly remained at loggerheads amid efforts to negotiate a permanent end to the Middle East conflict.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange slumped 9.44 points, or 1%, to 966.43.

Eight of the 12 TSX subgroups were positive, with information technology up 3.1%, while telecoms collected 0.9%, and real-estate climbed 0.7%.

The four laggards were weighed most by gold, down 2.5%, materials, falling 2.2%, and health-care stocks off 0.3%.

ON WALLSTREET

The S&P 500 rose to a fresh all-time high on Thursday as oil prices declined and traders digested more inflation data.

The Dow Jones Industrials 69.73 points to greet the closing bell Thursday at 53,839.99.

The much-broader index advanced 50.49 points to 7,798.99.

The NASDAQ Composite leaped 214.54 points to 26,803.03, boosted by gains in Meta Platforms, Microsoft and Netflix.

Cisco Systems was a key laggard of the day, falling more than 8% after the company’s latest quarterly results failed to impress investors.

Cerebras and Coherent also moved lower after their earnings updates, with the former plummeting almost 12% and the latter dropping roughly 8%.

CPI for July increased by 0.1% month over month, matching expectations. The tame report gave the S&P 500 a boost, with the benchmark closing higher for the first time in three sessions. The report led to traders paring expectations for a rate hike in September.

Prices for the 10-year Treasury popped, making yields plunge to 4.64% from Wednesday’s 4.69%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices dropped $2.03 to $81.54 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices dwindled $60.50 to $4,407.00 U.S. an ounce.
