Managing $9 billion but layoffs 14%: Bitwise's survival sample

According to Woofun AI, cryptocurrency asset management company Bitwise has implemented a decision to reduce the size of its workforce by about 14% against the backdrop of the industry's continued downturn. This move is not an isolated incident; it is a direct response of institutions dealing with tight liquidity and revenue pressure during the market downturn cycle, marking the beginning of a shift from expansion to defensive contraction by leading asset managers.

Despite a drastic reduction in the personnel structure, Bitwise's business base remains stable. Currently, the total number of employees is about 155, which is a significant reduction from about 180 before. However, according to data compiled by Woofun AI, the company still manages more than 70 products, including a $2.3 billion Bitcoin ETF, with total assets under management close to $9 billion.

This divergence between 'human efficiency improvement' and 'asset size' reveals the industry's ultimate pursuit of operational efficiency in stock competition.

Asset price fluctuations at the macro level are the core driving force behind this adjustment. Bitcoin is currently trading at around $64,000, which is about 50% lower than the all-time high (ATH) set in October last year. The declining market, which lasted more than ten months, forced the entire industry to re-evaluate operating costs. Streamlining operations has become a common trend to ensure financial sustainability. As one of the institutions that launched the Bitcoin Spot ETF, Bitwise was authorized by regulators earlier this year and attracted a large number of institutional investors, sharp market fluctuations are still testing the resilience of various asset management companies.

This layoff not only affects the internal structure, but also sends a signal to the market about staffing and product strategy. Even strong companies are not completely immune to bear market pressure, which has prompted peers to re-examine their operational flexibility. Investors should pay close attention to how Bitwise and similar companies adjust their strategies, as their approach to the difficult situation will provide key clues to understanding the overall state of the crypto market and highlight the strategic value of maintaining agility in a volatile market.
