Interpump Group (BIT:IP) Stock Rises On Cash Strength Despite Margin Drift

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

Interpump Group walked into this earnings print with the stock already on a strong run, up about 15% over the past month and closing at €38.72 on 6 August. That kind of pre result optimism often sets a trap for disappointment. Instead, the headline was an earnings beat built on profit quality, not just accounting noise, as basic earnings per share reached €0.608 and free cash flow hit €62m in the quarter.

The market now has to decide whether a slightly softer organic sales line and a 22.9% EBITDA margin justify second guessing that optimism, or if the cash and earnings profile still support the recent rally.

Interpump bull case leans on Hydraulics and cash

Bulls argue that Interpump can use eco efficient Water Jetting and a recovering Hydraulics arm to keep lifting quality of earnings and margins through the cycle. Q2 gives that view some backing. Group organic sales slipped 0.7%, yet EPS rose 8.2% and free cash flow reached €62m, helped by a better mix, a stable tax rate and a lower share count. Hydraulics is key to this story. It delivered 6.2% organic growth and a margin of 21.2%, the fourth quarter of sequential improvement, despite some dilution from recent deals. Net debt moved to €306m from about €400m a year earlier, which supports the idea of a self funded roll up. Management kept 2026 and 2028 margin and free cash flow targets intact, so for now the main operational milestones behind the bullish narrative are on track.

Bear case focuses on margins, Water Jetting and cyclicality

Bears worry that Hydraulics recovery is fragile, Water Jetting strength is one off and that margins will sag as mix and tariffs bite. Q2 does give some material to that side. Group organic sales fell slightly and the EBITDA margin eased to 22.9% from 23.8%, which shows that operating leverage is not unlimited. Water Jetting sales declined after the very large Hammelmann China orders in H1 2025, so the fear of episodic demand looks reasonable. Management also flagged weaker shipyard and chemicals activity and the weakest region in APAC, while acquisitions are slightly diluting group margins. Geopolitical issues and US tariffs added cost, even if most of it was passed through. Guidance still assumes an EBITDA margin of 22.0 to 22.5% and record free cash flow, so there is little room for further mix or macro pressure without reviving the bear narrative.
