Outsiders were still waiting until Thursday morning for an agreement between Iran and Oman to partially restart the Strait of Hormuz. Iran previously stated that an agreement on the proposed waterway is in the final stages. The two countries bordering this important waterway have been discussing the strait's shipping management plan since last month. Recently, both Iran and the US said they are about to reach an agreement. Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi told the Iraqi News Agency on Tuesday that almost all issues raised have been agreed upon in principle, including an aerial map of maritime traffic entry and exit routes. However, he warned that the bilateral agreement with Oman “does not mean the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.” Tehran insisted that the US was not part of the agreement with Oman, and hinted that the normalization of the straits would depend on Washington lifting the blockade of Iranian ports.
