The Zhitong Finance App learned that data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that in the first half of the year, telecom business revenue totaled 887.3 billion yuan, a year-on-year decrease of 2.1%. The total telecom business volume, calculated at constant prices for the previous year, increased 7.7% year over year. The number of mobile phone users is growing steadily, and 5G users are developing rapidly. By the end of June, the total number of mobile phone users of the three basic telecom companies and China Radio and Television reached 1,844 million, a net increase of 17.04 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, 5G mobile phone users reached 1,288 million, a net increase of 84.34 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 69.9% of mobile phone users.

II. Development of telecom users

The number of fixed broadband access users is increasing steadily, and the number of gigabit users continues to expand. By the end of June, the total number of fixed Internet broadband access users of the three basic telecom companies reached 701 million, a net increase of 10.24 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, there were 670 million fixed Internet broadband access users with an access rate of 100 Mbps and above, accounting for 95.6% of the total number of users; 258 million fixed Internet broadband access users with an access rate of 1000 Mbps and above reached 258 million, a net increase of 19.49 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 36.8% of the total number of users, an increase of 1 percentage point compared to the first quarter.

Mobile IoT end users are growing rapidly. By the end of June, the three basic telecom companies had developed 2,994 million mobile IoT end users, a net increase of 106 million over the end of the previous year. The number of Internet TV (IPTV, OTT) users reached 409 million, a net increase of 990,000 over the end of the previous year.

III. Telecommunication service usage

Mobile internet traffic grew rapidly, and the DOU value remained high in June. In the first half of the year, cumulative mobile internet traffic reached 219.7 billion GB, an increase of 17.7% over the previous year. By the end of June, the number of mobile Internet users reached 1,636 million, a net increase of 25.91 million over the end of the previous year. In June, the average household mobile Internet access traffic (DOU) reached 23.57 GB/household/month, an increase of 13.6% over the previous year, 0.53 GB/household/month higher than at the end of the previous year.

Phone call volume continues to drop. In the first half of the year, outbound calls on mobile phones reached 946.9 billion minutes, a year-on-year decrease of 6.2%; call time for landline callers reached 27.93 billion minutes, a decrease of 20.4% over the previous year. In the first half of the year, the national mobile SMS business volume fell 8% year on year; mobile SMS business revenue fell 12.9% year on year.

IV. Status of communication capabilities

The total length of optical cable lines has increased steadily. By the end of June, the total length of optical cable lines across the country reached 76.12 million kilometers, an increase of 3.2% over the previous year. Among them, access network optical cables, local network relay optical cables, and long-distance optical cable lines account for 60.5%, 38%, and 1.5%, respectively.

The construction of gigabit fiber broadband networks is progressing in an orderly manner. By the end of June, the number of Internet broadband access ports nationwide reached 1.27 billion, a net increase of 17.9 million over the end of the previous year. Among them, the number of optical fiber access (FTTH/O) ports reached 1.23 billion, a net increase of 15.52 million over the end of the previous year, accounting for 96.6% of Internet broadband access ports. By the end of June, the number of 10G PON ports with gigabit network service capabilities reached 32.86 million, a net increase of 1.241 million over the end of the previous year.

The construction of 5G networks continues to deepen. By the end of June, the total number of 5G base stations reached 5.102 million, a net increase of 263,000 over the end of the previous year, accounting for 39.1% of the total number of mobile base stations and an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared to the first quarter.

5. Regional developments

All regions are speeding up the penetration of gigabit and 5G users. By the end of June, the penetration rates of fixed broadband access users of 1000 Mbps and above in the East, Central, West and Northeast regions were 36.1%, 37.4%, 38.3%, and 31.8%, respectively, up 1.5, 3.5, 2.2 and 2.8 percentage points from the end of the previous year; 5G mobile phone user penetration rates were 69.4%, 70.8%, 69.7%, and 70.6%, respectively, up 3.9, 4.3, 3.8 and 4.1 percentage points from the end of the previous year.

Mobile Internet access traffic continues to grow rapidly in all regions. In the first half of the year, mobile Internet access traffic in the East, Central, West and Northeast regions reached 93.18 billion GB, 51.18 billion GB, 62.24 billion GB, and 13.09 billion GB respectively, up 19.4%, 15.8%, 16.5%, and 18.7% year-on-year.
