FIFA said today that despite strong opposition led by UEFA, it will proceed with the proposed “sale of shares in the World Cup and other tournament business” negotiation process. FIFA said in a statement: “Our planned consultation process was disrupted by 'false media reports'. We will continue to advance this consultation to ensure that every member association can exercise voting rights based on facts.” FIFA President Infantino recently proposed plans to establish a $20 billion subsidiary to run the World Cup and other events and sell minority shares to private investors. Infantino said the move is a “golden opportunity” to promote soccer globally, unleash “previously untapped commercial value” and increase financial support for member associations. This plan was strongly opposed by UEFA and other continental football federations.
