CaixaBank (BME:CABK) Stock Faces Margin Pressure Despite Strong Profit Growth

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

The market came into today still digesting CaixaBank’s strong run, with the stock up about 15% over the past three months and now sitting at €12.48. The latest quarter delivered another heavy profit print, with Q2 net income of €1.631b and a group return on tangible equity around 18% for the first half. That kind of earnings engine matters more than the day’s price flicker. The real story for long term holders is whether this level of profitability can justify a P/E that already sits above the wider European banks sector.

CaixaBank bull case leans on breadth of growth

Bulls argue that CaixaBank is a volume and fee growth story that is less tied to pure loan pricing. Q2 and H1 support this to a good extent. Customer funds and performing loans are both up about 8% year on year and the bank added more than 400,000 net new clients, which fits the “commercial machine” narrative. Wealth and protection are doing real work. Assets under management saw €4.3b of inflows and now exceed €300b, while insurance premiums are up about 11.8% year to date and service revenues are up 7.4% year on year. Net interest income is progressing in the low single digits with help from ALCO reinvestment and a stable deposit mix, with non interest deposits up 5.5% and interest bearing deposits still about 26% of the base. Operating costs are rising roughly 4.3 to 4.5% yet the cost or income ratio stays below 40%.

Bear case focuses on loan demand, margins and risk

The main bearish pushback is that CaixaBank relies on a benign Iberian backdrop, firm loan demand and protected margins that could all prove fragile. There are early signs of this risk. Management acknowledges competitive pressure in mortgages and deposits and deposit costs on interest bearing balances are already around 1.61% with a guided beta in the low 20s. That challenges the idea of indefinitely cheap funding, even with non interest deposits still growing. Earlier board comments flagged a “certain slowdown” in corporate loan applications, which sits uncomfortably beside the current 8% performing loan growth. Management has also added a supply shock downside scenario into IFRS 9 models and booked extra overlays and provisions in Q2. The stronger Q2 profit print and 18% RoTE do not remove these risks. They only show that credit quality and capital are solid for now.
