On July 30, local time, the World Trade Organization issued a statement saying that Brazil has submitted a dispute negotiation request to the WTO over the imposition of tariffs by the United States on products originating in Brazil. The Brazilian side stated that the tariffs imposed by the US are higher than the applicable tariff levels stipulated in the US Coordinated Tariff Schedule and do not comply with the relevant provisions of the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and the “Dispute Settlement Understanding”. The WTO stated that the purpose of the negotiations was to provide both parties to the dispute with an opportunity to discuss the disputed matter and seek solutions. If negotiations fail to resolve the dispute after 60 days, the appellant may request a ruling from the Panel of Experts.
