The recent price decline of 10% in Western Copper and Gold Corporation's (TSE:WRN) stock may have disappointed insiders who bought CA$565.0k worth of shares at an average price of CA$4.17 in the past 12 months. Insiders buy with the expectation to see their investments rise in value over a period of time. However, recent losses have rendered their above investment worth CA$386.2k which is not ideal.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Western Copper and Gold

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Independent Director Pamela O’Hara bought CA$208k worth of shares at a price of CA$4.15 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than CA$2.85 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid CA$565k for 135.50k shares. But insiders sold 7.00k shares worth CA$16k. Overall, Western Copper and Gold insiders were net buyers during the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below.
