While Rent.com.au Limited (ASX:RNT) shareholders have enjoyed a good week with stock up 11%, they need remain vigilant. In spite of the relatively cheap prices, insiders made the decision to sell AU$4.7m worth of stock in the last 12 months. This could be a warning indicator of vulnerabilities in the future.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Rent.com.au

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, Bevan Slattery, for AU$4.7m worth of shares, at about AU$0.04 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (AU$0.072). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. We note that the biggest single sale was 94% of Bevan Slattery's holding. Bevan Slattery was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid AU$1.9m for 37.78m shares. But insiders sold 117.72m shares worth AU$4.7m. Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term.
