Brown & Brown (BRO) Stock Rallies While Margin Pressure Clouds Growth

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

Brown & Brown came into this print with a strong recent run, and the stock just added another 5.7% in a single session. Investors were clearly ready to pay up. The question is why. The headline is margin pressure, not collapse. Revenue reached about US$1.7b for the quarter and adjusted earnings per share landed at US$1.07, yet the adjusted EBITDAC margin slipped by 100 basis points. For an insurance broker prized for consistent profitability, that small squeeze is what matters most, and it sets up the rest of the earnings story.

Brown & Brown bull story leans on acquisition engine

The upbeat view on Brown & Brown is that an acquisition machine, plus stronger fee and advisory work, can keep growth healthy while margins and cash flow hold their ground. Q2 fits that script only partially. Total revenue rose about 30% with Accession and other deals doing most of the work, and retail organic growth including contingents was a modest 2.5%. That shows the M&A engine is functioning, but the core book is not yet firing. Margin resilience is mixed. Consolidated adjusted EBITDAC rose, yet the margin compressed by 100 basis points, even as retail margin expanded with discipline and contingents. Cash generation of roughly US$610m year to date is solid and supports buybacks and dividends. The bull case of acquisition scale plus balance sheet strength is supported, while the idea of broad based organic momentum and cleaner margin expansion still looks unproven.

Margin squeeze and weak organic feed the Brown & Brown bears

The cautious view is that Brown & Brown is leaning too hard on deals, faces softer CAT property pricing, and could see margin pressure and integration risk. Recent results give that view some support. Organic revenue was roughly flat, sitting in a band from a 0.7% decline to a 0.7% increase depending on contingents, while total growth came mainly from acquisitions including Accession. CAT property rates are down 15% to 35% and management still talks about volatility in those lines. The consolidated adjusted EBITDAC margin slipped 100 basis points and share count climbed by about 41 million due to Accession, with repurchases only partly offsetting dilution. Cash conversion dipped from 20% to 17% because of Accession related items. None of this signals a break in the Brown & Brown model, but it does validate concerns about dependence on deals and the cost of integrating them.
