07:46 AM EDT, 07/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- European consumer organization BEUC and Dutch lawmaker Dirk Gotink are pushing for stricter rules on the European Union's new 3-euro customs duty on e-commerce imports, Reuters reported Monday. BEUC, an umbrella group for consumer organizations across 31 European countries, urged the European Commission to prevent consumers from facing unexpected checkout or delivery fees, while Gotink said in a July 7 letter that online platforms, not consumers, should pay the duty. The duty applies to goods bought online and shipped directly to European Union consumers from July 2026 to July 2028. The commission said platforms, sellers or carriers are legally responsible for paying it upon import. The European Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
