US Trade Representative Jamison Greer said he is looking forward to phased progress in the US-Mexico-Canada agreement by the end of 2026; however, the Trump administration is seeking to finalize stronger binding clauses with Mexico and Canada, and negotiations may continue until 2027. “There are some issues in the US-Mexico-Canada agreement that will take longer to resolve. They are all very critical issues.” He claimed. Greer said at the Senate Finance Committee hearing: “I hope we can reach at least some separate arrangements with Canada and Mexico between now and the end of the year. However, there are also many people who pay close attention to labor and environmental regulations on core issues such as rules of origin. These topics require more time to discuss. Relevant discussions may continue until next year, and the National Assembly will be consulted simultaneously.” At the same time, Greer proposed that countries that have signed trade agreements with the US should strictly abide by their promises, and that US tariffs are one way to guarantee the implementation of the agreement. He revealed that he had already spoken with Canadian trade officials on Tuesday, and the other party did not state any plans to retaliate against the US plan to impose 50% tariffs on about 5% of imported goods from Canada.
