On July 22, Li Ming's team from the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhang Yan of the University of Michigan collaborated to publish a research paper entitled “CRISPR-Cas Intervented Expression of Embedded Anti-Phage Defence Systems” in Nature. For the first time, the study revealed the cooperative regulation mechanism between adaptive immunity and innate immunity in prokaryotes, providing a new perspective for understanding the evolution and interaction of living immune systems. The study not only proposed a theoretical framework for the first time that two types of immunity cooperate and protect each other at the level of prokaryotic life, but also established a new discovery path for novel immune systems based on this original theory, and systematically identified a series of novel immune elements, including prokaryotic caspase protease and novel nucleases. The discovery of these new components not only provides new knowledge and tools for in-depth understanding and intervention in innate immunity in higher life, but is also expected to provide key component resources for innovation in underlying molecular technology.
