On July 22, the Bulgarian Parliament voted to approve the deployment of up to 8 US Air Force KC-135 air tankers and their crew members, as well as up to 250 US military personnel carrying personal weapons and ammunition, and related airport equipment to be stationed at Bezmer Air Force Base from July 24 to October 1, 2026. On July 21, local time, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it had received a diplomatic note from the Iranian Embassy in Bulgaria regarding the possible deployment of air tankers by the US Air Force at Bezmer Air Force Base. The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Bulgaria will not take any hostile action against Iran, which is in line with its treaty obligations to its ally the United States. It is impossible for any military action in the Middle East to be carried out from Bulgarian territory. It is hoped that all parties to the conflict will renew their commitment to de-escalate the situation and cease hostilities as soon as possible. Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bagae warned Bulgaria not to allow the US to “use its territory to launch military operations against Iran.”
