Bulgarian Prime Minister Radev said on the 20th that the Bulgarian government has received a request from the US to deploy up to 8 tankers at Bulgaria's Bezmer Air Force Base and will submit it to the parliament for approval. Radev said that the government received this request from the US side on the 17th aimed at supporting military operations in the Middle East. The US side quoted the defense cooperation agreement between the two governments signed in 2006. The agreement allows the US military to use bases in the country such as Bezmer Air Force Base. Radev said that although the US side made an urgent request for deployment, the Bulgarian government has yet to approve it because according to Bulgarian law, the parliament must make such a decision. The government will propose to Parliament that these tankers be allowed to be deployed at Bezmer Air Force Base. Radev said that US military tankers were deployed at Sofia Airport in February of this year, and the Bulgarian government at the time bypassed Parliament to approve this. Subsequently, the caretaker cabinet extended the stay of US tankers. At the end of May, the new government led by Radev shortened the authorization period until June 30 because the US side did not give the positive response that the Bulgarian side wanted on visas for Bulgarian citizens to enter the US. The US military aircraft withdrew at the end of June.
