The Zhitong Finance App noticed that Apple (AAPL.US) raised the prices of several iPhone models in the Japanese market, and the retail price of some models in its smartphone series increased by as much as 11%.

According to the prices announced by Apple's Japanese online store, this price adjustment applies to the iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air, and iPhone 16. Depending on the model, the price increased from 8,000 yen to 20,000 yen.

Apple has yet to publicly explain this latest price change.

Exchange rate pressure may be the driving force behind the scenes

This price increase comes at a time when the exchange rate of the yen against the US dollar continues to weaken, which has led to a decrease in the value of overseas income when converted back to the US dollar. Companies that import products to Japan or report performance in US dollars regularly adjust local pricing to reflect changes in exchange rates.

Apple has also been dealing with higher parts costs. The company raised the prices of several other products last month, including the Mac and iPad, but the price of the iPhone remained the same at the time.

There is currently no indication that the latest iPhone price adjustments will roll out globally. If these changes are mostly driven by Japan's monetary environment, they are likely to be confined to this market.

For investors, the move highlights Apple's willingness to adjust regional pricing to protect profit margins from adverse exchange rate changes. Foreign exchange rates have always been a frequent headwind for multinational technology companies, and selective price increases can partially offset the impact on revenue and profitability. Analysts are likely to look for more reviews on pricing strategies and forex in Apple's next quarterly earnings report.
