The latest analyst coverage could presage a bad day for HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited (NSE:HDFCLIFE), with the analysts making across-the-board cuts to their statutory estimates that might leave shareholders a little shell-shocked. This report focused on revenue estimates, and it looks as though the consensus view of the business has become substantially more conservative.
Following the downgrade, the latest consensus from HDFC Life Insurance's 24 analysts is for revenues of ₹1.2t in 2027, which would reflect a decent 16% improvement in sales compared to the last 12 months. Prior to the latest estimates, the analysts were forecasting revenues of ₹1.3t in 2027. The forecasts seem less optimistic overall, with the slight decrease in revenue estimates in the latest consensus update.

We'd point out that there was no major changes to their price target of ₹759, suggesting the latest estimates were not enough to shift their view on the value of the business.
Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. The analysts are definitely expecting HDFC Life Insurance's growth to accelerate, with the forecast 22% annualised growth to the end of 2027 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 10% per annum over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 10% per year. Factoring in the forecast acceleration in revenue, it's pretty clear that HDFC Life Insurance is expected to grow much faster than its industry.
The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their revenue estimates for this year. Analysts also expect revenues to grow faster than the wider market. Overall, given the drastic downgrade to this year's forecasts, we'd be feeling a little more wary of HDFC Life Insurance going forwards.
