US President Donald Trump said on Thursday he had met with senior leaders in the auto industry to discuss the ongoing controversy over “right to repair” legislation. Trump met GM CEO Mary Barra, Ford Motor Company senior executive Andrew Frick, and senior officials from the National Auto Dealers Association and the Auto Innovation Alliance. Republican Senator and former auto dealer Bernie Moreno also attended the meeting. Ford confirmed its participation in the conference, while automotive industry groups declined to comment. GM did not respond to requests for comment. “Yesterday we had an appointment with a representative from the automotive industry. They don't want people to fix their cars. I said, 'This is so weird! '” Trump said. “They have a rule: no one is allowed to repair their own car.” Over the years, the automotive industry has been in constant disputes with independent repair shops and other groups over the right to repair new cars. The US auto repair service market has an annual output value of about 200 billion US dollars. Legislation passed by a committee of the US House of Representatives last week will incorporate existing industry memorandums of understanding into law and give the Federal Trade Commission the power to enforce these agreements.
