Insider Sellers Might Regret Selling Evolus Shares at a Lower Price Than Current Market Value

Evolus, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:EOLS) stock price has dropped 11% in the previous week, but insiders who sold US$1.5m in stock over the past year have had less luck. Insiders might have been better off holding onto their shares, given that the average selling price of US$10.30 is still below the current share price.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Evolus Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The President, David Moatazedi, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.3m worth of shares at a price of US$10.05 each. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$5.91). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid US$393k for 50.00k shares. On the other hand they divested 140.79k shares, for US$1.5m. In total, Evolus insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. The average sell price was around US$10.30. Insider selling doesn't make us excited to buy. But we note that the selling, on average, was at well above the recently traded price of US$5.91. Does Evolus Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Evolus insiders own 9.9% of the company, worth about US$39m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.

So What Do The Evolus Insider Transactions Indicate?

There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Evolus insiders. But we do like the fact that insiders own a fair chunk of the company. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision. For example, Evolus has 2 warning signs (and 1 which doesn't sit too well with us) we think you should know about.

Of course Evolus may not be the best stock to buy. So you may wish to see this free collection of high quality companies.

For the purposes of this article, insiders are those individuals who report their transactions to the relevant regulatory body. We currently account for open market transactions and private dispositions of direct interests only, but not derivative transactions or indirect interests.
