The board of Telia Company AB (publ) (STO:TELIA) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 11th of February, with investors receiving SEK0.50 per share. This means the dividend yield will be fairly typical at 5.1%.
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Based on the last payment, Telia Company's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Generally, we think cash is more important than accounting measures of profit, so with the cash flows easily covering the dividend, we don't think there is much reason to worry.
EPS is set to grow by 75.6% over the next year. If recent patterns in the dividend continues, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 80% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of SEK3.00 in 2016 to the most recent total annual payment of SEK2.00. Doing the maths, this is a decline of about 4.0% per year. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Telia Company has impressed us by growing EPS at 13% per year over the past five years. While EPS is growing at a decent rate, but future growth could be limited by the amount of earnings being paid out to shareholders.
In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Telia Company's payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We don't think Telia Company is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
