A core member of Apple's Face ID team is co-founding a startup dedicated to developing technology that can help robots enhance their vision and sense their surroundings more safely. The company called Lyte officially stepped out of stealth mode this Monday. As of now, the company has raised around $107 million. The three former Apple employees who founded the company were the core developers of Face ID's depth sensing and perception technology. Prior to that, Shpunt co-founded 3D sensing technology provider Prime Sense and served as Chief Technology Officer. The company was acquired by Apple in 2013 for $350 million and became the predecessor of Face ID technology. Gerson also worked for Prime Sense before Apple bought it. In an interview, Shpunt said, “We're working to bring the best-in-class ideas Apple teaches us — attention to detail, operational excellence, and how to surprise customers — to the robotics market. Apple is definitely an excellent 'school'.”
