Victims' Lawyers Seek Legal Costs from BHP Over Brazil's Mariana Dam Disaster

01:01 AM EST, 12/18/2025 (MT Newswires) -- Legal representatives for the victims of the Mariana dam disaster in Brazil are demanding an immediate payment of 189 million pounds sterling in legal costs from BHP Group (BHP.L, BHG.JO), London's Financial Times reported Wednesday. The claim filed with the High Court in London relates to a November 2025 ruling that found the mining giant liable for the 2015 fatal dam disaster. Lawyers for BHP said the claim was "absurd," with the amount overstated. The current claim does not include the amount payable to the victims, which will be decided in a separate trial scheduled for October 2026. BHP is expected to split the damages with Brazilian mining group Vale, but its lawyers are still working to appeal the liability ruling. BHP did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
