The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors approved zoning for a data center on a 2,000-acre site at Hassayampa Ranch, near Buckeye. Arizona Land Consulting and venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya are raising funds to finance the project.

The Phoenix Business Journal reports the Hassayampa Ranch site is in unincorporated Maricopa County, on the west side of the White Tank Mountains. It’s situated near Howard Hughes Corp.’s Teravalis project in Buckeye — the company’s largest master-planned community at 37,000 acres.

The new land use designation for Hassayampa Ranch will allow warehouse, data center and power generation uses.

The City of Buckeye previously opposed the massive project, but eventually okayed it. Earlier this month, the Chandler City Council rejected a rezoning request for an AI data center. The Tucson City Council also recently turned down a data center zoning application due to water and power issues.
