Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In Gentrack Group

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

We wouldn't blame Gentrack Group Limited (NZSE:GTK) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Gary Miles, the MD, CEO & Executive Director recently netted about NZ$6.8m selling shares at an average price of NZ$9.00. That sale reduced their total holding by 23% which is hardly insignificant, but far from the worst we've seen.

Gentrack Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Gary Miles was the biggest sale of Gentrack Group shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even slightly below the current price of NZ$9.15. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 23% of Gary Miles's holding.

Does Gentrack Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Gentrack Group insiders own 1.9% of the company, worth about NZ$19m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Gentrack Group Insiders?

Insiders sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And even if we look at the last year, we didn't see any purchases. But since Gentrack Group is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. Insider ownership isn't particularly high, so this analysis makes us cautious about the company. So we'd only buy after careful consideration. While it's good to be aware of what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
