A court in the French city of Tours ruled on the 10th that a volunteer firefighter was jailed for 2 years and suspended for 1 year for multiple private arson. According to reports, the volunteer firefighter who was jailed was a 25-year-old farm worker who set fire 7 times in the forest of the Indre-Loire department in central western France from March 31 to July 12. The last fire he ignited destroyed 6 hectares of woodland. Defendant's lawyer Arthur Gauthier admitted that the client was involved in many fires, but defended the volunteer firefighter on the grounds that “cigarette butts were not extinguished” or “agricultural equipment was mishandled,” saying that he “did it unwittingly.”
