The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a statement saying that a protective shield used to seal the reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant was damaged by a drone attack and lost its sealing performance. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant is located about 110 km north of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. In 1986, the No. 4 reactor at the nuclear power plant exploded, causing a serious nuclear leak. After the accident, the Soviet Union poured cement to build a “sarcophagus” storage reactor. Ukraine sealed the “sarcophagus” with a huge arched steel shell in 2012. The protective cover was launched in 2019 and is designed to last 100 years. The International Atomic Energy Agency issued a statement on the 5th saying that the protective shield was seriously damaged after being attacked by a drone in February this year. After a thorough evaluation of the protective cover last week, a working group of the agency determined that the protective cover had lost its sealing performance, but that its load-bearing structure and monitoring system were not permanently damaged. The agency's director general, Rafael Grossi, said that the protective cover repair project has begun, and full restoration is needed to prevent further deterioration of the facility's functions and ensure long-term safety.
