Simply Wall St · 1d ago

Mi Ming Mart Holdings Limited (HKG:8473) has announced that on 9th of January, it will be paying a dividend ofHK$0.003, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. The dividend yield of 9.8% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.

Mi Ming Mart Holdings' Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. Based on the last payment, Mi Ming Mart Holdings' profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 35.4% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 4,503%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.

Mi Ming Mart Holdings' Dividend Has Lacked Consistency

Mi Ming Mart Holdings has been paying dividends for a while, but the track record isn't stellar. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. Since 2018, the dividend has gone from HK$0.018 total annually to HK$0.012. This works out to be a decline of approximately 5.6% per year over that time. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Earnings per share has been sinking by 35% over the last five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

The Dividend Could Prove To Be Unreliable

Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think Mi Ming Mart Holdings is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock.
