The Zhitong Finance App learned that on November 28, the Hong Kong Government Statistics Department published the results of the 2024 annual statistical survey on economic activity - import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food services, showing that in 2024, the total revenue of Hong Kong's import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food service industries was HK$5473.5 billion, up 4.5% from 2023; in 2024, the average total revenue per company rose 10.6% from 2023 to HK$38.7 million.

The total operating expenses of the import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food service industries in 2024 were HK$4,97.7 billion, up 4.5% from 2023; the average total operating expenses of each company in 2024 increased 10.6% from 2023 to HK$35.3 million.

The total surplus of the import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food service industries in 2024 was HK$475.7 billion, up 3.9% from 2023; the average total surplus of each company in 2024 rose 10.0% from 2023 to HK$3.4 million. The combined surplus of these industries accounted for 8.7% of total revenue in 2024, which is similar to 2023.

The value added in the import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and food service industries in 2024 was HK$649.1 billion, up 3.4% from 2023. The added value of this industry can roughly measure the contribution of these industries to Hong Kong's GDP. The average industry value added per company in 2024 increased by 9.5% compared to 2023 to HK$4.6 million.

According to the statistical survey results, in 2024, there will be about 141,400 companies engaged in import and export trade, wholesale and retail trade, and accommodation and catering services, with about 89,900 employees. The average number of employees per company is 6.3.

In the import and export trade sector, the total revenue in 2024 was HK$4,523 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$4,025 billion. The total surplus rose from HK$413.2 billion in 2023 to HK$430.8 billion in 2024, accounting for 9.5% of total revenue in 2024. The value added of the industry increased by 5.6% compared to 2023 to HK$493.3 billion.

In the wholesale sector, total revenue in 2024 was HK$275.2 billion, while total operating expenses were HK$269.9 billion. The total surplus fell from HK$5.6 billion in 2023 to HK$5.3 billion in 2024, accounting for 1.9% of total revenue in 2024. The value added of the industry decreased by 2.6% from 2023 to HK$19.1 billion.

In the retail sector, total revenue in 2024 was HK$489.2 billion, while total operating expenses were HK$458.9 billion. The total surplus rose from HK$29.9 billion in 2023 to HK$30.3 billion in 2024, accounting for 6.2% of total revenue in 2024. The value added of the industry decreased by 7.7% from 2023 to HK$68.9 billion.

In the accommodation services sector (including hotels, guesthouses, hostels and other companies providing short-term accommodation services), the total revenue in 2024 was HK$46.1 billion, while the total operating expenses were HK$39.2 billion. The total surplus rose from HK$6.1 billion in 2023 to HK$6.9 billion in 2024, accounting for 15.0% of total revenue in 2024. The added value of the industry increased by 6.5% compared to 2023 to HK$21.8 billion.

In the food service sector (which mainly includes restaurants), total revenue in 2024 was HK$139.8 billion, while total operating expenses were HK$137.4 billion. The total surplus fell from HK$2.9 billion in 2023 to HK$2.4 billion in 2024, accounting for 1.7% of total revenue in 2024. The added value of the industry rose slightly by 0.7% from 2023 to HK$46 billion.
