People familiar with the matter revealed that Cambodia plans to store part of its gold reserves in the Shenzhen Free Trade Zone treasury registered on the Shanghai Gold Exchange. The agreement between China and Cambodia involves storing newly purchased gold bars rather than transferring metals from existing reserves. People familiar with the matter also said that some other countries have also expressed interest in this and are evaluating the benefits of allocating gold reserves from traditional gold centers such as London. The governor of the Central Bank of Cambodia said in October that several locations are being considered as storage places for Cambodian gold, but did not say whether China was one of them. According to the World Gold Council's latest assessment, the Central Bank of Cambodia holds about 54 tons of gold, accounting for a quarter of Cambodia's 26 billion US dollar foreign exchange reserves.
