The Meituan rider social security subsidy will cover the whole country, making it the first security system to cover all riders

On October 27, Meituan announced through its official WeChat account that rider pension insurance benefits officially cover the whole country. According to information, this is the industry's first social security subsidy program open to all riders.

This development is also two months ahead of the launch date previously announced by Meituan. According to Meituan's official Weiwei, starting in November, riders of all types can check the rules on the rider app and local social security consultation points.

According to reports, at present, Meituan has initially built a multi-level welfare guarantee network covering all riders. Among them, basic benefits include pension insurance benefits, “rider injury insurance,” accident insurance, special weather allowances, etc.; advanced benefits include major illness care coverage for riders and families, child education funds, etc.; at the same time, work benefits such as working meals, medical examinations, women's care, family travel, and vocational training are also provided.

Meituan said that the above benefits are open to all types of riders in all industries across the country to the greatest extent, and the total coverage is expected to exceed millions of people.

The head of the Meituan Rider Support Team explained that at present, more than 500 rider and expert conferences have been held in various places on rider protection issues, and tens of thousands of suggestions have been collected and improved one by one.

Since February of this year, under the support and guidance of local social security departments, the Meituan Rider Social Security Subsidies City Promotion Team has carried out more than 10,000 question-and-answer activities at offline places such as social security centers, trade union posts, rider sites, and street consultation service points to provide riders with policy interpretation and operation guidelines.

Previously, social welfare departments in many places set up special service channels for riders to facilitate riders to apply for insurance enrolment and payment matters in addition to running tickets. For example, in the pilot cities, the Quanzhou Municipal People's Social Affairs Department set up an exclusive window for Meituan riders to provide “one-on-one” services; the Social Security Center of the Nantong Municipal People's Social Affairs Bureau and Meituan held a pension insurance policy promotion conference to provide one-stop services such as “policy announcement+on-site question-and-answer plus handheld enrolment”; and social security service corners at rider sites in many places.

From the pilot “work injury insurance” for takeaway riders to the implementation of pension insurance benefits across the country, Meituan continues to strengthen the protection of workers in new forms of employment.

According to reports, under the guidance of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Affairs, Meituan began participating in the “New Employment Form Occupational Injury Insurance” pilot project in July 2022. This year, it was expanded to 17 provinces and cities, and takeaway riders have “work injury insurance.” By the end of September this year, Meituan had paid more than 2 billion dollars, covering a total of 13 million riders. In 2024, on the basis of the “work injury insurance” pilot exploration, Meituan formulated a rider pension insurance plan, refined the details of the plan under the guidance of the competent authorities, and launched a pilot project in early 2025. At the Knights Day on July 17, Meituan announced that it will land nationwide within the year, covering more than one million riders.

“More than 400 yuan a month, or 5,000 yuan a year, solved a lot of the stress of life.” Qiu Fengying, a rider from Changsha, is a mother of three. She has been a rider for 8 years and has already bought a house and settled in Changsha. In July, Meituan's pension insurance benefits landed in Changsha, and she soon received more than 400 yuan in benefits.

Tang Weihong, 47, felt the same way. After receiving the subsidy, he immediately recommended it to his colleagues. “This is a good policy. For people like me who insist on paying social security, it's equivalent to a monthly salary increase of 500 yuan.”

Riders from Guangzhou, Guangdong, Harbin, Heilongjiang and other places have settled accounts for the reporter. After a year's subsidy, they can get more than 6,000 yuan.

The person in charge of Meituan's rider protection business explained that Meituan continues to improve various details in the implementation of the social security plan. For example, working with the social security department to shorten the rider's social security subsidy payment process, riders can get the subsidy as soon as they pay at the end of the month in the first week of the following month; the customer service team has set up a rider social security hotline and smart customer service to provide 7x24 hour consulting services.

“Next, we will further deepen the 'basic security+advanced security+life benefit' welfare model for riders.” Meituan said that for example, “parent-child leave” and “fall harvest vacation” for riders will be piloted one after another, and food allowances, family travel, etc. will continue to expand.
