US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard announced on Wednesday the first major reform of his office since its establishment. By October 1, he will lay off more than 40% of his staff, saving more than 700 million dollars a year. The US Office of the Director of National Intelligence was established after the “911” incident to coordinate the work of the US intelligence community composed of 18 intelligence agencies. Gabbard said in a statement: “Over the past 20 years, ODNI has become bloated and inefficient. The intelligence community is full of abuses of power, unauthorized disclosure of confidential information, and politicization of intelligence,” Gabbard said in a statement. “Thorough reforms are needed.” When Gabbard took office in February of this year, ODNI had about 1,800 employees. Prior to Wednesday's decision, she had already cut staff by about 25%.
