On August 15, the new airport in Nantong ushered in new developments. According to relevant information, Shanghai-Suzhou Nantong New Airport Construction Investment Co., Ltd. was officially registered on August 15. It was established as a joint venture between Shanghai Airport Co., Ltd. and Nantong Urban Construction Group Co., Ltd., and the two parties hold 51% and 49% of the shares respectively. At the same time, registration information shows that the company has a registered capital of 1 billion yuan, and its business scope includes civil airport operations, public air transportation, construction engineering, civil aircraft maintenance, and general aviation services. The new airport in Nantong has always been dubbed the “Shanghai Third Airport” by the outside world. Precisely because it bears the heavy responsibility of serving the integration of the Yangtze River Delta, it will take on some spillover traffic from Shanghai and surrounding regions in the future. In September 2020, the Civil Aviation Administration of China approved the site selection project for the new Nantong airport. The second-tier site in Tongzhou District of Nantong City was the preferred site. The site is close to 100 kilometers in a straight line from Shanghai's Hongqiao and Pudong airports. According to relevant plans, the new airport in Nantong will build two long-distance runways and a terminal that will meet the passenger throughput of 40 million people each year, and reserve two runways and satellite halls in the long term. The design has an annual passenger throughput of 40 million passengers and 80 million passengers in the long term, and an operation level of 4F.
