Canadian and New Zealand officials have reached an agreement to resolve a trade dispute surrounding Canada's system to protect its domestic dairy industry. The system was sharply criticized by US President Trump. New Zealand filed a trade dispute over Canada's supply management system in 2022 under the terms of the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement on the grounds that its dairy exports were restricted from entering the Canadian market. New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McRae said, “New Zealand is happy that this dispute has now been resolved and that New Zealand exporters are better guaranteed access to the Canadian market.” In a statement, he said Canada promised to make “commercially meaningful changes” to the supply management system. Canada said in its statement that the country's officials agreed to “minor policy adjustments” and that New Zealand agreed not to take further action against Ottawa under the CPTPP dispute resolution procedure.
